What Is Orthorexia?
“Orthorexia is a type of Eating Disorder characterized by a fixation on ‘Healthy Eating’.”
Concerned by the quality of food nutrition content (and its interpreted impact on health) as opposed to quantity and not necessarily impact on body size or shape. Categorizing food as good versus bad/safe versus unsafe and steering clear of certain foods.
The term “orthorexia nervosa” is described by people whose extreme diets- intended for health reasons- are in fact leading to malnutrition and/or impairment of daily functioning (Bratman, 1997).
Seeking “dietary perfection” can lead to worsening emotional distress via depression, mood swings, and/or anxiety.
When does “healthy food focus” become a pathological condition?
Obsessive thinking: Spending considerable time scrutinizing the source
Compulsive behavior: Research/ checking ingredients and labels as well as excessive planning
A belief that self-esteem is based on dietary choices
Self-punishment via fasting or over-exercise and escalating restriction
These lead to:
Feeling: notable guilt when deviating from strict diet guidelines
Thinking: critical thoughts about others who do not adhere to rigorous diets
Behaviors: Avoiding eating prepared by others and people who do not share similar views about food
It can happen to any gender, age, and irrespective of your body!
