Suicide Prevention - Beyond Blue

Sometimes life can be overwhelming and suicide may seem like the only way to relieve the pain.
1 in 6 Australians will have thoughts of suicide at some point during their lives. Suicidal thoughts are common but they can pass. You don't need to act on them.

When anyone has any concerns for a loved one, I always advise, if it is immediate (ie: they say they are suicidal) go straight to ED. If the person is unwilling, just call 000.

It can’t be your job to assess if the person has intent or not, that is the job of the police or ambulance who can keep the person safe. Because once the feeling or urge passes, longer term support and strategies can be implemented, and a death prevented.

Don’t be afraid to ask the person if they are thinking or harming or ending their life. We know that if a person hasn’t thought of this l, talking or asking about it won’t put the idea in their mind. It can actually be a relief if it’s something they have bottled up, or they will say no, and they may not need a crisis intervention just other types of support and care.

A percentage of suicides (some estimates at 67%) are actually impulsive and driven by alcohol or substance use, a break up or intense emotional experience. If help is activated at this point, the crisis can be managed.

Those with longer term mental health issues can also be kept safe until solid safety and intervention plans are implemented with health professionals.

By raising awareness, maintaining connection and having the right information at hand, we can all have a hand in saving lives.

If you’re feeling suicidal, please know that suicidal thoughts can pass. You don't need to act on them.
There IS ALWAYS HELP! There are apps, phone supports, and if at immediate risk go straight to your local emergency department.  Having a prevention and management plan in place is essential. This can be done with your doctor and your psychologist or therapist (the right team is an investment in your long term wellbeing
