What Is an Employee Assistance Program and Why Does It Matter?

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is more than just a workplace benefit—it’s a confidential, employer-funded support system designed to help employees manage personal or professional challenges that may impact their wellbeing or performance at work.

At Evolve Wellbeing Psychology, our EAP model is grounded in short-term, outcome-focused psychological intervention. From addressing workplace stress and anxiety to supporting grief, family issues, and emotional burnout, our EAP offers practical, solution-oriented support when it’s needed most.

Why Offer an EAP?

Employers across Australia are increasingly investing in EAPs to:

  • Improve staff wellbeing and morale

  • Reduce absenteeism and presenteeism

  • Support employees during times of crisis or transition

  • Promote a mentally healthy workplace

According to Safe Work Australia, work-related mental health conditions cost Australian businesses over $543 million annually in workers’ compensation claims alone. Early support through EAPs can reduce this impact dramatically.

How Our EAP Works

Our approach begins with a triage process in the first session. The psychologist helps the employee identify whether their presenting issue is short-term (and can be addressed within the EAP’s limited sessions) or a more complex issue requiring longer-term support. In these cases, we:

  • Refer the employee to their GP for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)

  • Use the EAP sessions to manage acute or immediate concerns

  • Ensure continuity and appropriate care, all while preserving confidentiality

This ensures the EAP delivers high-impact support without replacing longer-term treatment.

Confidentiality Guaranteed

We understand that trust is critical. That’s why:

  • All sessions are private and confidential

  • No identifying information is disclosed to the employer

  • Reports to employers are fully anonymised, offering trends—not names

Our EAP complies with the Australian Privacy Principles, AHPRA standards, and the APS Code of Ethics.

Flexible Access

Support is available:

  • Between 7am–7pm, Monday to Friday

  • In-person, by phone or via secure telehealth

  • To eligible employees and their immediate family members (if your employer has opted in)

A Local Alternative That Delivers

Unlike large, impersonal providers, we offer:

  • Rapid appointment access (first session within 36 hours of referral)

  • Local knowledge and cultural understanding

  • A dedicated EAP clinical team with expertise in short-term interventions
